The HP Z8 is one of the most powerful workstations you can buy, but is it the right one for you? – RedShark News

Image
Review: The dual-processor HP Z8 supports up to 56 cores, Quadro RTX graphics, 3TB of RAM and loads of storage. But is this the right kind of power for your work? Let’s take a look. This HP Z8 G4 workstation just received a refresh that enables the 56-core configuration that we tested. Our testing included industry benchmarks like Viewperf 13, Cinebench and Octane. For application testing, we wanted to test the multi-core performance with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. Some of the tests met our performance expectations and some did not. Simple on the outside. Simple on the inside The Z8 has a sleek design. It is tool-less, compartmentalised and simple. With plenty of venting, the Z8 sports four USB connectors and an SD-card reader along with multiple front-facing drive bays. The rear of the workstation has six more USB connections, two ethernet connections, VGA, keyboard, mouse, and I/O connectors. Access to the interior of the Z8 is well designed, simple, and fast. Winning major awards puts UNSW interior architect graduate among the best in Australia Designs for a co-working incubator, a civic centre on Sydney’s Goat Island and a retail space to creatively showcase Australian fashion designs were three stunning projects which have put UNSW Interior Architecture graduate Zarah Baitz in the national spotlight. The Design Institute of Australia (DIA) awarded Ms Baitz the prestigious Graduate of the Year Award (GOTYA) for her three interior architecture pieces. She also won the National Interior Design Category across all DIA chapters and the award for NSW chapter category for Interior Design. Design Institute of Australia NSW Chair Nick Karlovasitis (MDIA) praised Zarah as “one of Australia’s next generation of design visionaries” and says the Institute “can’t wait to see what she does next”. Want to learn to design theme parks? Here’s a new place to start – Theme Park Insider

August 14, 2019, 5:58 PM · A couple of months ago, I asked if the popular online instructional course Masterclass ever would feature a themed entertainment designer. Now, competitor Khan Academy has jumped in to fill that space, offering an online tutorial in cooperation with Walt Disney Imagineering. Imagineering in a Box features a series of instructional videos and exercises that take viewers through the process of creating theme park attractions. “Disney Imagineers from hundreds of career disciplines around the world share how they use a wide range of skills – from story development and conceptual design, to math, physics and engineering – that all come together to create immersive experiences,” the course’s description says. Khan Academy is an online learning resource known for its supplementary courses aimed at high school students, but it also offers material that dives into more professional disciplines — such as, now, theme park attraction design. The Imagineering in

Fresh out of Sav: Cristina Pelaez at MKDA – District

District Staff August 15, 2019 Written by Cristina Pelaez, Photos by Nick Thomsen and Cristina Pelaez Since I moved to New York and started working, my life has been very exciting and fast-paced. In my free time, I am constantly discovering new things in the city, while at work I am faced with a new project, task or challenge every day. Something that challenged me when I first started working was designing in AutoCad, a design software that I never had any formal training in. I’ve been able to learn it as I go by referencing tools from similar programs I’m more familiar with, looking up tutorials online and asking a lot of questions. It feels good to realize that I’ve been able to learn so much in such a short amount of time, all thanks to the patience and attention of my coworkers and my openness to receive these new experiences as lessons. I’m very proud of my fearlessness throughout this very new and unfamiliar time because it has allowed me to sta

Affinity Publisher review – Review – Digital Arts Online

Image
By Cliff Joseph | on August 06, 2019 Expert Rating: Price When Reviewed: £48.99 Pros: Impressive range of tools at an affordable, one-off price Cons: Limited web design features Retailer Price Delivery   Price comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwide Serif’s new member of the Affinity family may be ideal for anyone hunting a subscription-free InDesign. Speaking as someone who still has a copy of Photoshop 1.0 – on a single floppy disk, believe it or not – I resent the increasing trend of treating software as a subscription service that you have to pay for every month, rather than a simple product that you can buy and own for as long as you choose. For creative users, of course, the key culprit as such here is Adobe and its Creative Cloud service , which charges a considerable monthly fee for users of InDesign, Photoshop and other Adobe software tools. There are, of course, several rivals to Photoshop that still allow you to

How game user interfaces can inspire better tech products – VentureBeat

Image
Video games have some of the best user interfaces and user experiences among all digital products. And that’s why some tech companies are taking inspiration from the people who design video games when it comes to designing non-game technology interfaces. Harlan Elam is a good example of someone who made the leap from games into cybersecurity, where his skills have been very useful in visualizing complicated dashboards. Elam worked for 4.5 years at Blizzard Entertainment as a user interface and user experience designer, but he recently redesigned the product interface for Jask, a cybersecurity company. This is exactly the kind of leap that McAfee predicted in a report last year, where the security firm said that gamers have the skills to be good cybersecurity professionals. Elam pulled ideas from a variety of disciplines — games, virtual reality game Lone Echo, and even science fiction shows like Westworld — to build a heads-up display (HUD) for Jask. I talked to Elam about th

Learning to succeed in the digital age with the Geek Squad at the B&G Club – Sentinel & Enterprise

LEOMINSTER — In the digital age, becoming familiar with and understanding new technologies is important for people of all ages and students at the Boys and Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster rolled up their sleeves Wednesday to start on their own technology journey. The Geek Squad Academy, in a partnership with Best Buy, was hosted at the club with the goal of exposing students to different technologies and arts. “Because most of the jobs for the future are not in existence now, it’s a great way for kids to start learning about all the different types of technology,” said club Executive Director Donata Martin. Justen Bristlin, signature programs specialist with Best Buy, said this is the 13th year the academy has been hosted. Bristlin said the program gives students the tools necessary to succeed in the 21st Century. Instructor Steve O’Day helps Amelia Carboni , 10, make some digital music at the academy. Best Graphic Design Software 2019 – Digital Arts Online

Whatever your budget and level of expertise, there’s a wide range of cool design tools to choose from. The term ‘graphic design software’ covers a multitude of sins – and we use that word advisedly – but in the creative industries it most commonly refers to two main types of software. On the more artistic side of the fence there are ‘illustration’ or ‘drawing’ programs, typified by the mighty Adobe Illustrator. These drawing programs use vector graphics tools to create artwork ranging from corporate logos to technical drawings, and even sketches and illustrations that mimic the appearance of paint and other natural media. However, graphic design can also cover page layout software as well – also known as DTP or ‘desktop publishing’ – which allows you to combine text and graphics for magazine articles, web pages, sales brochures, or incredibly long and boring technical manuals. There’s a lot of overlap between these two types of software as well. Most drawing programs also includ
